Director of User Experience Design

Berlin Product

As Director of User Experience at AMBOSS, you’ll inspire, develop, and champion our team of product, ux, and service designers. You'll create useful, usable, and engaging product experiences and interfaces that our members - clinicians, medical students, educators - will love to use. Ultimately, you’ll help us illustrate that good design equals good business; and healthier outcomes for patients across the globe.

Why AMBOSS?

AMBOSS is a private company founded in 2012 by a group of physicians and today continues to harness cutting-edge technology to transform the way physicians acquire and apply scientific knowledge. We produce the AMBOSS platform, a dynamic learning and clinical decision support tool committed to empowering physicians to deliver the best possible care.  Each AMBOSSian is passionate about being the champion of clinicians today - this motivates and unites us each day towards success. And what does success look like? When a clinician or med student tells us, “AMBOSS makes learning and practicing medicine easier and enjoyable. I love what I do, and a big part of that is because of AMBOSS.”

Today, approximately 500 people work for AMBOSS,  attracting top talent around the world in software engineering, medical writing, and commercialization. Twenty-five percent of AMBOSSians are physicians.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Responsible for overall team performance and creating a space where great design work can happen. Get the most out of your team through coaching and mentoring.
  • Develop best practices for collaborating within agile, multi-disciplinary product development and medical teams. Engage cross-functional peers to help them understand how the team works, the value design can offer, and opportunities to influence strategic priorities
  • Equip the team to talk in the language of business and value. Demonstrate how design’s work ties into the larger goals and objectives of the business.
  • Build a deep understanding of our highly specialized target group, the Medical context, ways of thinking, and how our UX might best solve their needs in a differentiated way
  • Evolve our UX approach in collaboration with product, tech, medical, and business leaders. Over time develop deep knowledge of, and an integrated view of, our product offerings across user segments, markets, and user journeys.
  • Define and oversee design quality, build a shared understanding of what success looks like, and facilitate constructive criticism.
  • Be a champion for inclusive design practice, your team, and your function. Manage up and across the org.
  • Facilitate team topology and design operations necessary to develop a highly effective design organization.
  • Make sure the team has the resources it needs to succeed, the clarity of decision-making it needs to continually make progress, and the career paths it warrants as it grows.
  • This is a leadership role serving alongside peers in Research, Engineering, Product, and Medical on our R&D Strategy board. You will report to our Chief Product and Design Officer, Chad Jennings and partner closely with our Creative Director.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Fluency in the range of design practice specialties (interaction design, user interface, content design, service design, design research), and the ability to leverage design methods, tools, and processes to sufficiently support each of these design practice specialties in identifying requirements.
  • Confident communicator; ability to publicly present design perspectives, vision, process, and faceted proposed solutions.
  • Deep understanding of and experience in guiding groups through a structured design or knowledge-making process (design thinking workshops, strategy forums, co-creation sessions, design sprints, etc.).
  • Skill engaging cross-functional teams to align stakeholder points of view into a cohesive design strategy and realistic scopes of work.
  • A genuine appreciation and empathy for the business and technical perspectives that make up cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to demonstrate a level of business acumen to align design deliverables with business outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of the technologies that influence/inform digital design solutions and opportunities new interface technologies, such as GenAi or Voice UI, may provide.
  • Experienced coaching and mentoring designers and building teams. Managed a team of 10+ including senior individual contributors.
  • You probably have at least ten years of experience, possibly working both in-house and agency-side, delivering great work across notable products and brands, particularly consumer and mobile.
